The M Clifton Inn (1296 Clifton Inn Dr., 434/971-1800, www.thecliftoninn.com , $195-395) is a luxurious inn with 17 rooms and suites. This romantic establishment sits on 100 acres and was built and used by Thomas Jefferson’s son-in-law, Thomas Mann Randolph Jr., who was also the governor of Virginia. During the Civil War, the family of Colonel Mosby (the “Gray Ghost of the Confederacy”) stayed at Clifton after fleeing their home near Middleburg in Northern Virginia. Mosby had a secret hiding area outside the main house where he is said to have left supplies for his family when Union troops were nearby. Today, guests enjoy first-rate service in the serene environment of this charming inn. The many extras include an infinity pool and complimentary wine with historic significance (it was used in a toast by Thomas Jefferson upon the signing of the Declaration of Independence).
Two miles west of town is the highly acclaimed M Boar’s Head Inn (200 Ednam Dr., 434/296-2181, www.boarsheadinn.com , $225-325). The 573-acre estate is a destination within itself, with 175 rooms and suites, a fitness club, a spa, 20 tennis courts, a lap pool, golf course, biking, fishing, hiking, and even hot air balloon rides all on-site. There are also four restaurants and 20 event spaces. The inn is a certified “Virginia Green” establishment. Rooms are decorated with antique furnishings and have beautiful bathrooms with modern conveniences. Premium bath items, plush bathrobes, and high-quality bedding are standard. The service is top-rate. The inn is close enough to downtown attractions to be convenient, but far enough away that you feel like you’re out in the country. Rooms are spread out over several buildings. Ask for one in the main inn building.
The award-winning M Keswick Hall (701 Club Dr., Keswick, 434/979-3440, www.keswick.com , $195-880) at Monticello is a 1912 Italianate villa that was turned into a grand resort by the widower of designer Laura Ashley. Guests are welcomed into this extravagant home in a comfortable lounge opening onto a patio that overlooks the 600-acre estate grounds. Guests in its 48 rooms can enjoy access to the Keswick Club, where they can play golf, tennis, swim in the saltwater pool, and use the spa. The resort is beautifully decorated in Laura Ashley’s style and with many personal antiques and artwork. The resort won’t disappoint for those who can afford its lofty price tag. It is about 15 minutes from Charlottesville in Keswick.
